Innovation and students top the agenda at Teaching and Learning Conference

Placing innovation at the heart of education and empowering students were in the spotlight at the University of West London’s (UWL) successful annual Teaching and Learning Conference.
Around 190 members of staff and invited guests took part in the conference, ‘Rethinking the Curriculum,’ at UWL’s campus site in Ealing. It was an opportunity for colleagues from different academic schools and departments to share examples of good practice and learn from each other in order to improve as practitioners.
More than 70 delegates contributed on topics such as creating courses in partnership with students and employers, new assessment methods, giving students more influence over their learning and also the uses of technology for boosting student engagement. The keynote presentation was delivered by Professor Liz Falconer from Bournemouth University. Representatives from UWL’s Student Union (UWLSU) also took part, delivering a presentation and a workshop.

Dr Jannie Roed, Head of Academic Practice said: ‘This year’s Teaching and Learning Conference was enormously beneficial for colleagues and our external guests – who were impressed by our academic teams’ high level of engagement. There is so much good practice in the classrooms here that this conference is a great opportunity for professional development, with the ultimate aim of improving still further the university’s already high-quality teaching.’
Matt Myles-Brown, UWLSU’s Representation Manager, said: ‘This conference is always one of the highlights of the year, especially because it’s the best opportunity to find out about the wonderful things colleagues are doing. We really enjoyed the debates and discussions, while it was great to hear some amazing ideas about personalising education which can help our students to fulfil their potential.’
Also at the conference, more than 30 posters were displayed about academic practice and prizes from Blackboard were awarded for best presentation, best poster and best tweet.
