Two photography students win prizes at major exhibition for young talent

Two young photographers from the University of West London (UWL) have won awards for their work at the UK’s biggest art, design and fashion graduate showcase.
Judges at ‘Free Range’ – which takes place at the Old Truman Brewery in Brick Lane, east London, were impressed by collections created by the next generation of talent from the university’s London School of Film, Media and Design.
Ahmed Osman, who is in his final year of BA Photography, won the prestigious Urban Photographers’ Association Award – which came with a prize of photo books worth £100. Meanwhile, Manny Singh, who studies BA Commercial Photography won ‘Best Student in Show’, for his impressive collection entitled ‘Dystopia’.

Ahmed, 21, said: ‘The University of West London has provided me with all the resources I need for creating strong, professional-standard images and the lecturers are brilliant too; they’ve really helped me develop my conceptual and theoretical skills – which are crucial. They have given me the confidence to pursue my ideas.
‘Winning the award for urban photography means a lot because I put so much hard work into this collection, which is about the disappearance of social housing due to regeneration. It’s an important topic and I know people who are personally affected by it.’
The pair’s work exhibited as part of UWL’s show at Free Range. Entitled Perspective, it featured collections by 21 students and was on display alongside 12 other universities. Free Range is a significant event in the photography industry’s calendar because it is when fresh talent and industry influencers meet each other, exchanging ideas and contact details. Representatives from leading advertising agencies including St Luke’s, TBWA and MBA were among thousands of visitors to UWL’s show, this year.
Peter Bennett, BA Photography course leader at LSFMD, said: ‘This show is important because it gives our students huge exposure at the start of their careers. They have exhibited alongside some of the leading universities and performed superbly well, so I’m enormously proud of what our students achieved.
‘Winning the ‘Best in Show’ award is the icing on the cake: it illustrates that UWL provides excellent education which is closely linked to careers in the photographic industry.’
