Posted: 14 July, 2017

Staff and scientists at The Pirbright Institute are proud today following the Construction News Awards, where John Sisk & Son were finalists in the Project of the Year category for their work on the BBSRC National Vaccinology Centre: The Jenner Building – located at the Institute’s campus in Surrey.

The prestigious award, for projects costing between £10m and £20m, was presented at the awards ceremony in London last night (13 July). Sisk were accompanied by Dr. Mike Johnson, Director of Capability at Pirbright, who appointed Sisk and oversaw the planning and delivery of The Jenner Building project.
Dr. Johnson said: “We are very proud and pleased to have been shortlisted for this award and for our partners Sisk, as they faced some significant competition in this particular category.
“Sisk developed a number of innovative solutions that helped overcome the challenges of constructing The Jenner Building and the complex commissioning and validation process required for this virus research facility, which operates at Level 2 Containment.
“The Jenner Building also includes a large number of energy saving features and Sisk helped us deliver a very efficient building that consumes 20% less energy than the buildings it replaces. It subsequently achieved a BREEAM Excellent certification and will set the standard for future developments on the campus here at Pirbright.”
Tom Wall, Director of Life Sciences at Sisk, said, “The Jenner Building is one of a series of significant projects that we have successfully delivered within the Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences sector and has enabled us to develop our expertise working within this most complex and specialist field of contracting. Being a finalist for this award is testament to this and the teams’ collaborative approach, which brought a number of stakeholders together and delivered best value to Pirbright from the outset.”
The BBSRC National Vaccinology Centre: The Jenner Building, was officially opened in March 2017 by HRH The Princess Royal. It is part of a wider redevelopment of the Institute’s campus at Pirbright, which is the result of £350 million of investment from central Government and the BBSRC.
First place for Project of the Year was awarded to Galliford Try for their work on the East Midlands Airport Runway Refurbishment.
