A student chef at SRUC’s Elmwood campus in Fife has been awarded a bursary to help further develop her culinary skills.

Liga Sprukte, who is studying for an HNC in Professional Cookery at Scotland’s Rural College in Cupar, was presented with the bursary at the recent St Andrew’s Dinner at the Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa in St Andrews. A second bursary was presented to students from Fife College.

The bursaries are aimed at helping the students to enhance their learning and experience as they prepare for careers in the hospitality industry.

The final decision on recipients are made by professional chefs associated with Savour St Andrews – organisers of the St Andrew’s Day Dinner – after applications are submitted from both colleges.

SRUC’s Elmwood campus sponsored the starter – a pheasant dish prepared by Geoffrey Smeddle from the Michelin-starred Peat Inn – while students also helped out in the kitchen on the hugely successful evening.

An outstanding international student

Vicki Munro, Programme Leader, Hospitality, at Elmwood, said: “We are delighted that Liga, who is from Latvia, has received this scholarship. She is an outstanding international student and is so enthusiastic. Her confidence has really developed during her time at Elmwood, particularly as English is not her first language and I know that this experience will help her to further expand her skills and knowledge of Scotland’s natural larder.”
