Alabama’s Fitzpatrick Wins 2017 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award

OKLAHOMA CITY–()–Minkah Fitzpatrick from the University of Alabama has been named the
2017 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Winner, given to the top defensive back in
college football based on ability and character. Fitzpatrick (6-foot-1,
203-pounds), is a sophomore from Old Bridge, N.J. (St. Peter’s Prep).

Minkah Fitzpatrick is a leader both on and off the field for the Crimson
Tide while proving to be the heartbeat of the nation’s No. 1 scoring and
pass efficiency defense. He is maybe the most versatile defender in the
country, playing safety, cornerback, nickel back and dime linebacker for
the Crimson Tide. He has 44 tackles on the season along with 5.5 tackles
for loss, 1.5 sacks, an interception, six pass breakups, a forced
fumble, a blocked field goal and three quarterback hurries. He is also
second in Alabama career interception return yards (274) on nine
interceptions.

The Paycom Thorpe Award is named after history’s greatest athlete, Jim
Thorpe, and is presented by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in Oklahoma
City. Thorpe excelled at every sport in which he competed, including
football where he played on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

Langham from Alabama won the award in 1993.

The announcement was made at The Home Depot College Football Awards
Show presented by Gildan
on ESPN. Fitzpatrick was presented the
Paycom Thorpe Award by former University of Oklahoma head coach, Bob
Stoops on behalf of Paycom and the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.

The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and Paycom will honor Fitzpatrick at
the Jim Thorpe Award Banquet on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 in Oklahoma
City. The banquet will be held at the National Cowboy and Western

Multi-Platinum Selling Pop Artist Andy Grammer to Headline 2017 Capital One® Orange Bowl Halftime Show

Chef & Restaurateur of the Year

This year the most important cooking competition on network television gained a Latin voice. Chef Aarón Sánchez joined Chefs Gordon Ramsay and Christina Tosi in the popular MASTERCHEF, airing on FOX, Wednesdays at 8PM ET. Sánchez is an award-winning chef, TV personality, and cookbook author. He is the chef/owner of Mexican restaurant Johnny Sánchez, with locations in New Orleans and Baltimore. Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez is well on his way to joining the select club of legendary Mexican boxers. Fashion Designer of the Year

Designer Carlos Campos was born in Honduras and arrived in New York at thirteen years old to pursue his own version of the American Dream. He is now giving back his native country by providing educational opportunities to deserving students, and working with the Honduran Government and private business on the development of Honduras’ first college for fashion design. This year for his bold and convention breaking spirit as both a designer and American entrepreneur he was selected to create a capsule collection for a top brand Tequila.

Campos studied design at The Fashion Institute of Technology, afterwards embarking on a successful career as a design consultant for such brands as Zara, and PvH and as a Broadway costume designer for “Jersey Boys,” and “Fiddler on The Roof.” He has been awarded The Fashion Group International’s Rising Star for Menswear, and was a top-ten finalist for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. He was the first Latino-American Menswear designer to have been nominated as a fund finalist.

EDUARDO VILARO

Arts & Culture Pioneer of the Year

Eduardo Vilaro began his tenure as Artistic Director of Ballet Hispanico in 2009, becoming only the second person at the helm since the company was founded in 1970. In 2015 he expanded his role to also become Chief Executive Officer of the organization. Already the leading Hispanic dance organization in the U.S. Vilaro now plans to expand Ballet Hispanico’s vision and transform it into a household name. New initiatives include having ‘Ballet Hispanico Communities’ in different parts of the United States. There’s also the relationship with Cal State University in Los Angeles to involve their students in innovative programs. Houston and Miami are also in the works.

Vilaro was born in Cuba and has been part of Ballet Hispanico since 1985 as a principal dancer and educator. Vilaro has infused Ballet Hispanico’s legacy with a bold and eclectic brand of contemporary dance that reflects America’s changing cultural landscape.

Regional Champion Los Angeles Youth Football Players Who Won, May Actually Lose

A final push is being made to raise money to send the FBU LA Central 7th Grade team to compete in the National Championship in Florida. On the first weekend of December, LA Central defeated Arizona and Orange County to become the first FBU LA Central team in history to ever compete on a national level.

The FBU Central LA 7th grade teams consist of 23 local inner-city youth all-star football players. This is a unique format as FBU draws star players from every local league (with no weight limits).

Since the tournament is scheduled a few days before the Christmas holiday, the flight and lodging costs are $900-$1000 per player. Due to inflated prices during the holiday season, many players may not be able to make it.

These boys started gelling their chemistry back in early November and now have an opportunity to gain the priceless experience of representing not only themselves but their state, teams, coaches, family and friends who have supported them in becoming quality citizens, successful students and outstanding athletes.

Fred Arteaga, the Los Angeles and Orange County FBU director is personally footing the bill for all the coaches, and corporate sponsor Discount Two-Way Radio has donated $600 to the travel fund. In addition, WingStop has also decided to help out by providing gift certificates to be raffled off. But time is running out, and all players need to be in Naples by Dec. 15.

Team Mom, Phenice Hurtado, has also set up a GoFundMe campaign. “These boys started gelling their chemistry back in early November and now have an opportunity to gain the priceless experience of representing not only themselves but their state, teams, coaches, family and friends who have supported them in becoming quality citizens, successful students and outstanding athletes,” she said.

“The boys worked so hard to get to this point. It would be devastating if any player doesn’t get the opportunity, and is left behind, these guys are a real team — they belong together,” says parent Ben Burns.

“These kids will get a chance to be exposed to major college football programs for an opportunity to earn a scholarship. College recruiting is getting younger and younger. Over 30 athletes alone from last year’s FBU tournament received D1 offers.”
