Whitecaps remain undefeated in CONCACAF Champions League

Vancouver Whitecaps FC are even 1-1 with New York Red Bulls after 90 minutes in the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League quarter-finals stage. Kekuta Manneh scored the opening away goal for Whitecaps FC before Bradley Wright-Phillips equalised for New York at Red Bull Arena in Harrisburg.
The series will conclude on Thursday 2 March at BC Place in Vancouver, with the series winner (most goals) advancing to the semi-finals to face either Pumas UNAM or Tigres UNAL of Mexico.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC are undefeated in 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League through five matches. They are the third Canadian team to reach the quarter-finals following in the footsteps of both Impact Montréal and Toronto FC. Vancouver Whitecaps FC qualified for 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League after winning the 2015 Canadian Championship.

Manneh opened the scoring in the 39th minute with an assist from Kendall Waston. Then early in the second half, Whitecaps FC goalkeeper David Ousted stopped a penalty attempt by Sasha Klejstan. Just after the one hour mark, however, Wright-Phillips made no mistake as he scored from inside the penalty area to make it 1-1.
Also in the second half, Whitecaps Cristian Techera was ejected from the match in the 70th minute. He will miss the next match on suspension.
Vancouver’s starting XI featured David Ousted (goalkeeper), Jakob Nerwinski, Kendall Waston, Tim Parker, Jordan Harvey, Cristian Techera, Matias Laba, Russell Teibert, Kekuta Manneh, Alphonso Davies and Erik Hurtado.
In the second half, coach Carl Robinson replaced Hurtado with Giles Barnes (63′), Nerwinski with Sheanon Williams (76′), and Manneh with Kyle Greig (80′).
New York Red Bulls’ starting XI featured Luis Robles (goalkeeper), Sal Zizzo, Aurélien Collin, Aaron Long, Justin Bilyeu, Sasha Klejstand, Felipe, Sean Davis, Daniel Royer, Bradley Wright Phillips, and Gonzalo Veron.
In the second half, coach Jesse Marsch replaced Royer with Derrick Etienne Jr. (74′) and Wright-Phillips with Mike Grella (87′).
